One agency that ranks Canadian universities each year is Macleans Magazine. There are also a few global university rankings. These include the QS World University rankings, which ranks the top 640 universities overall each year and also ranks the top 200 universities in the field of medicine. The Shanghai Consulting World University Ranking ranks the top 500 universities worldwide, as well as the top 100 universities in the field of medicine. Macleans University Guide 2014 - Medical Doctoral Category


The Maclean’s University Rankings place schools in to one of three categories to recognize differences in levels of research funding, diversity of offerings and breadth and depth of graduate and professional programs. Universities in the Medical Doctoral category, ranked here, have a broad rangeof PhD programs and research, as well as medical schools.

This ranking gives each university an overall score based on the following criteria. Note that this is a general university ranking, not a medical school ranking.

 

1. Academic peer review based on survey - 40%

2. Employer review based on survey - 10%

3. Faculty student ratio - 20%

4. Citations per faculty - 20%

5. Proportion of international faculty - 5%

6. Proportion of international students - 5%

This ranking also gives universities an overall ranking, not a medical school ranking, based on the following criteria:

 

1. Alumni (10%)

2. Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20%)

3. Highly cited researchers (20%)

4. Papers published in Nature and Science (20%)

5. Papers in Science-Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20%)

6. Per capita academic performance (takes into account the number of staff) (10%)

Shanghai Consultancy World University Rankings 2014 - Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy


This ranking gives universities worldwide a ranking for their medical and life science related faculties, based on the following criteria:

 

1. Alumni winning Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine (10%)

2. Staff with Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine (15%)

3. Highly cited researchers in medicine, pharmacology and social sciences (25%)

4. Publications indexed in Science Citation Index-expanded and MED fields (25%)

5. Percentage of papers published in the top 20% of journals in MED fields (25%)

 

The top 9 universities in Canada according to this ranking are:

1. Teaching (30%)

2. Research: volume, income and reputation (30%)

3. Citations of research (30%)

4. Industry income (used as a measure of innovation) (2.5%)

5. International outlook (includes staff, students and research) (7.5%)
