Format
For 2023 entry, the ARU medical school interview is an in-person multiple mini interview (MMI) comprising of 6 stations. There is 1 minute of reading time and each station will last 7 minutes.
Dates
Interview invites will be sent out from November 2022 onwards. Interviews will take place on the Chelmsford campus from December 2022 to January 2023.
Questions
Questions will test your preparation and motivation to study medicine. They will assess your ability to respond spontaneously to various scenarios, without coaching.

Empathy
You engage with a role-player and are expected to interact with them as if the situation is real. They are testing your skills in establishing an effective rapport whilst dealing effectively with the challenges presented to you. Typical scenarios may include comforting someone about unfortunate events in their life.
You may be provided with a graph and asked to describe and interpret it and draw conclusions appropriate to the scenario. You will also be asked follow up questions on the specific features of the graph.
You may have to give verbal instructions to an actor to help them complete a task. Examples being riding a bike or teaching someone how to tie shoelaces. Sometimes, you cannot see what the actor is doing. They are testing your skills in communicating clearly whilst dealing with the time-pressure to complete the task in the given time.
You may be asked to discuss the insights you have gained from your work experience and your reflections on this. You may be asked about your personal attributes and qualities. You can also expect to be asked about your motivation to study at this university in particular. For these question types, it is important you have personalised reasons with specific examples to evidence your points.
The interviewer will assess your ability to demonstrate empathy in challenging situations through role play stations where you must utilise your verbal and non-verbal communication skills to demonstrate this attribute. You may be asked follow up questions about the importance of empathy.
Anglia Ruskin's Scoring System
Anglia Ruskin's MMI scoring system consists of 3 domains. You will be assessed on
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Initiative and problem solving
- Personal integrity and moral reasoning
Each domain is marked out of five, so the maximum score across 6 stations is 90.
The interviewers also give you a ‘Global Score’ which could be: poor, unsatisfactory, satisfactory, good or excellent. The score is not used to rank candidates, but may be considered in ‘tie-breaker’ decisions.

To give a concise and comprehensive answer to this question at your interview, there are three essential elements your answer needs to have :
1. Specific knowledge about the school, programme, place
2. Why the elements you mentioned are attractive to you
3. Evidence that you have made an effort to research the school and programme

What is unique about the course at Anglia Ruskin?
The ARU MBChB Medicine A100 programme is a 5-year course. They use a spiral curriculum, which means you constantly revisit previous knowledge. There is early clinical exposure in hospital and community settings from November in the first year, with blended learning and case-based discussions throughout. There are weekly cadaveric full body dissections. Students have the opportunity to complete a medical elective in the fifth year, and the opportunity to intercalate.
What is unique about Anglia Ruskin and its Medical School?
Anglia Ruskin University is the only undergraduate university in England which uses Thiel-embalmed cadavers. This method preserves the body in a more life-like manner so it's a great learning experience. Practice role plays
In order to ensure you do not get caught out, make sure you have practiced plenty of role play scenarios. Prepare for stations requiring you to give information / instructions to others and obtaining information / comforting others. Make sure you feel comfortable with reacting to the actors emotions and showing empathy.
